Seaman's Protection
Recently we found that at least two Marlow men had certificates of protection as recorded and certified by the U. S. government: Edward Gee and Nelson Huntley. The applications were 1800 and 1827, respectively. Both shipped out at New London not far from Lyme, CT, the town from which their elders came. As we understand it now, these Seaman's Protection certificates were to protect American sailors from being impressed by the British Navy. They are not the same as "Letters of Marque" which protected privateers from prosecution.
